Pair of Italian Polychrome Carved Wood Wall Lights
This pair of Italian polychrome carved wood wall lights combines richly sculpted Baroque ornament with the warmth of aged painted wood. Each wall light features a carved wooden backplate in high relief, centered by a gadrooned vase from which an exuberant bouquet of acanthus leaves rises beneath a pediment of confronting croziers.
The softly patinated polychromy combines terracotta, almond green, and cream highlights, recalling the decorative palette of Venetian lacquer work. Two wrought-iron arms extend laterally from each carved backplate, ending in scrolls and circular bobèches fitted with sheathed faux candles.
Carved Baroque-Inspired Backplates
The carved wood backplates provide the principal decorative focus. Each begins with a gadrooned vase raised on a small foot, from which stylized acanthus foliage unfolds into a compact architectural composition.
Above the foliage, opposing croziers form a distinctive pediment. The combination of scrolling forms, foliage, and architectural structure creates a richly layered silhouette that is particularly effective when viewed from different angles.
Aged Polychrome Finish
The painted surface brings an additional level of decorative interest to the carved forms. Terracotta, almond green, and cream tones remain visible beneath a beautifully aged patina, giving the pair the appearance of objects that have developed naturally over time.
Wear and scattered small losses are consistent with their age and contribute to the character of the finish. Consequently, the wall lights retain the informal charm of antique Italian decorative objects rather than appearing overly restored.
Italian Baroque Decorative Tradition
The vocabulary of carved flower vases, acanthus foliage, and scrollwork recalls the Baroque decorative tradition of northern and central Italy. Such carved and painted elements were used to enrich interiors with an intentionally historic character, particularly in the decorative arts of the Veneto and Tuscany.
These wall lights reflect that tradition through their theatrical carved forms and polychrome surfaces. Their compact scale, however, makes them especially adaptable to modern interiors as well as period settings.
