French Modernist Rattan Table Lamp Attributed to Louis Sognot, France 1950s
Elegant French modernist rattan table lamp attributed to Louis Sognot, crafted in France during the 1950s. The lamp features a sculptural hexagonal base in assembled rattan canes, supporting a cylindrical stem accented with rattan bindings.
Its most distinctive feature is the original double-layered architectural lampshade, composed of an inner fabric diffuser surrounded by an openwork structure of diagonally woven rattan strands. The design creates a warm and beautifully structured light.
The geometric treatment of the rattan strongly recalls the work of Louis Sognot, a leading figure of French modernist decorative arts and founding member of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM). During the post-war period, Sognot helped elevate rattan into sophisticated modern interiors, blending natural materials with clean architectural lines.
Condition
Good overall vintage condition with a warm natural patina consistent with age and use. The rattan structure remains well preserved, and the original electrical wiring and switch are retained.
Ideal as a bedside lamp, desk lamp, or accent light in Mid-Century Modern and contemporary interiors.
