Louis XV style dressing table, France second half of the 19th century.
The cabinetmaker of this beautiful Louis XV dressing table used a diamond shaped design pattern for his kingwood and rosewood marquetry. The table has a central flip up mirror and a compartment for cosmetics. Additionally it has a pull out writing surface and two drawers.
Historical Background
The term dressing table originally was applied in the 17th century to small tables with two or three drawers. It soon became common practice to conceal the fittings of these tables when they were not in use, and great ingenuity was exercised by 18th-century cabinetmakers to combine elaborate fittings with a handsome piece of furniture. Dressing tables were a must have piece of furniture in every private chamber of an 18th century lady. Please also read our blog post about the history of dressing tables.
