Antique Danish Furniture- Chest of Drawers, 1820
This Danish Biedermeier chest of drawers is a great example of the antique Danish furniture of the 19th century. It stands out for its beautiful mirrored mahogany veneer. It has three drawers and original brass fittings.
Historical Background
The Biedermeier period refers to an era in Central Europe between 1815 and 1848, during which the middle class grew in number, and the arts appealed to common sensibilities. It began with the Congress of Vienna at the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 and ended with the onset of the Revolutions of 1848.
In Denmark, the Biedermeier period corresponded with the so called Danish Golden Age.
The term Danish Golden Age is used to describe the period between 1800-1850 in which the Danish culture flourished. The German Romanticsm had a big influence on Danish painters and so did the evolving German-Austrian Biedermeier furniture style.
