Scandinavian Furniture: A Beautiful Piece of History
No antique Scandinavian furniture collection would be complete without this 19th-century Gustavian Commode.
This piece was acquired from a private European collection and originated from Sweden. It remains undamaged, and every piece is 100% original to the commode.
It features many traditional Neoclassic elements, such as the intricate hand-drawn pictures depicting a mandolin player and two putti.
The curving and graceful brass fittings add a touch of interest in contrast to the clean straight lines in the rest of the commode.
The walnut, beechwood, elmwood, and mahogany marquetry beautifully complement the smoky gray-green Kolmarden marble top.
All of these elements create a subtly stunning piece that models the retrained elegance that Gustavian furniture perfected.
Scandinavian furniture is well known for its ability to capitalize on both form and function. While this Gustavian commode is a striking piece of furniture, it also serves a practical purpose thanks to plenty of storage.
There are two small drawers and three large ones on either side, including a lockable middle panel. Included with the commode is the original key.
The Gustavian style is incredibly versatile, which is why pieces from this era remain some of the most sought-after items.
This commode works with a broad range of interior designs. Use a rectangular mirror to draw attention to the piece’s Neoclassic lines and shiny brass details.
Or, try it in a room with a traditional Gustavian color palette to bring out the colors in the marble top as well as the lighter tones in the marquetry.
It measures 16.93″ × 41.34″ × 32.68″.
