18th Century Baroque Walnut Sofa with Antique Figural Needlework
An exceptional 18th-century Baroque walnut sofa, distinguished by its elegant carved frame and richly detailed antique needlework upholstery. Dating to approximately the mid-18th century, the sofa combines graceful Baroque proportions with an unusually decorative textile program.
The walnut frame features a shaped serpentine back, gently curved open arms, cabriole legs, and a carved apron decorated with scrolling foliate and shell motifs. Its warm, naturally aged surface complements the muted colors of the historic upholstery.
Most striking are the pictorial needlework panels across the back. It presents a remarkable series of narrative scenes populated by elegantly dressed and allegorical figures. One panel depicts a horse-drawn chariot accompanied by a winged figure, suggesting a mythological or allegorical subject inspired by classical antiquity.
In contrast, the seat features dense floral needlework against a dark ground. It creates a rich decorative counterpoint to the lighter pictorial scenes above. The textiles show age and wear consistent with their historic character.
With its combination of carved walnut, sweeping Baroque form, and remarkable antique needlework, this sofa has a particularly collected and individual presence. It works beautifully as a statement piece in both traditional interiors and more contemporary settings, where the historic textile becomes almost a work of art in its own right.
