Biedermeier Furniture- Antique Biedermeier Chest of Drawers
This exquisite chest of drawers is a wonderful example for the quality of early Biedermeier furniture design.
Unique mirrored cherry veneer on front and top embellish this three drawer commode.
Additionally, the small ebonized wood escutcheons do not distract from the beautiful veneer pattern.
Historical Background
The early 19th-century Biedermeier style marks the transitional period between Neoclassicism and Romanticism.
The “Biedermeier” society, in general, concentrated on the domestic and (at least in public) the non-political.
As a consequence, the emphasis on home life for the growing middle-class meant a blossoming of furniture design and interior decorating.
Biedermeier furniture derives mostly from the austro-hungarian empire and Germany.
Stylistically, it softened the rigidity of the Empire style.
Consequently, the cabinet makers used light, native woods and avoided the use of metal ornamentation.
Throughout the Biedermeier period, clean lines and minimal ornamentation dominated the design.
The history of Biedermeier furniture is also the beginning of interior design for the ordinary home.
And although it’s been centuries since this style emerged, it remains as timeless and versatile as ever.
