This pair of French Modernist andirons exemplifies the geometric ironwork that shaped French decorative arts during the interwar period. Combining dense cast iron with slender wrought-iron elements, the pair balances industrial materiality with the sculptural clarity of French Modernist design.
Each French cast iron andiron features a bold rectangular aperture cut through its upright. This open geometric form transforms the heavy vertical mass into a graphic composition of positive and negative space, creating a striking interplay of light and shadow. The clean geometry reflects the influence of Art Deco and French interwar Modernism, when craftsmen increasingly reduced traditional forms to essential shapes.
