The First Modular Sofa Design
The first modular sofa is widely credited to Italian designer Cini Boeri, who introduced the groundbreaking design in 1971. Her “Strips” sofa, designed for the furniture company Arflex, was among the first to feature a fully modular and flexible system, allowing individual sections to be rearranged according to the user’s preference.
Boeri’s design was revolutionary for its time, focusing on comfort, flexibility, and the concept of furniture that could adapt to various living spaces. The Strips sofa won the prestigious Compasso d’Oro award and remains an iconic piece in modern furniture design.
