Judith van den Boom ‘Vitrified Variables’ Porcelain Stool, Studio Boom Wehmeyer, 2012
Dutch artist Judith van den Boom created this unique porcelain stool in 2012 as part of her Vitrified Variables series, produced in collaboration with Studio Boom Wehmeyer. The work exemplifies her exploration of material boundaries, transforming porcelain into a structurally resilient and sculptural medium.
Van den Boom shapes the seat from moulded and richly glazed porcelain, giving it the appearance of softly folded textile. This deliberate illusion contrasts with the material’s vitrified strength and cool, smooth surface. The artist mounts the form on a refined oak base, creating a precise balance between organic expression and architectural stability.
As part of a limited series of only 32 stools, each piece features a distinct form. This example stands as a signed, one-of-a-kind work, positioned at the intersection of functional design and contemporary sculpture.
