Louis XVI Cylinder Desk, South Germany around 1800.

The cabinetmaker used beautiful walnut veneer on the outside and inside for this beautiful Louis XVI cylinder desk. The outside of the roll top is additionally embellished with mirrored burled walnut veneer. The inside has four small drawers and two open compartments. The two lower drawers offer a lot of storage space. The desk can be used in a study but would also make a great addition in an entryway or living room area.

Historical Background

The cylinder desk is also called “bureau Kaunitz”. It was introduced in France in the first half of the 18th century by Wenzel Anton von Kaunitz, then the ambassador of the Habsburg Empire to the French court. The French court adopted this type of desk with great enthusiasm and it was also often used by German, Swiss and Austrian cabinetmakers in the late 18th and early 19th century.

The desk is in excellent refinished condition. The brass fittings are original. It measures H 42.52 in. x W 38.59 in. x D 23.63 inches (H 108 cm x W 98 cm x D 60 cm).
