Styylish Conversations: Timeless Design with Brandalyn Designs

Styylish Converstaions- Brandalyn Dennis from Design- Styylish

In this edition of Styylish Conversations, we’re thrilled to feature Brandalyn Dennis, founder and principal designer of Brandalyn Designs, a Utah-based interior design studio celebrated for its layered, livable interiors. With a philosophy rooted in authenticity and timeless beauty, Brandalyn combines classical influences with modern practicality to create homes that feel both sophisticated and deeply personal.

Known for her refined approach that bridges traditional elegance and contemporary sensibility, Brandalyn’s work reflects a thoughtful appreciation for craftsmanship, materials, and history. Whether designing a serene family home or a character-filled retreat, she curates spaces that tell a story — often enriched by the warmth and depth of antique pieces.

From her early fascination with interiors to her nuanced understanding of beauty and function, Brandalyn shares how she cultivates spaces of enduring character and quiet sophistication.

Personal & Career Background

Q.: What inspired you to become an interior designer?

Growing up, I constantly re-designed my room. I would pore over American Girl doll magazines—not for the dolls, but to study the sets and spaces. It was then I realized my passion for creating environments that evoke our best senses and feelings.

Q.:  How would you describe your signature style in just a few words?

Traditional elements with a twist. I love something unique tossed into a space.

Q.: Has your approach to design changed over the years?

Absolutely. As I grow older and experience more, I feel like a bit more tradition creeps into my designs. I love creating a sense of place and home. The world is increasingly becoming more chaotic, and I feel it’s so important to have a space of our own to find respite and inspiration.

Design Philosophy & Process

Q.: When starting a new project, what is the first thing you consider?

Function. We’ve got to pour into our client’s day-to-day needs, pinch points, and tasks to find out how we can really hone in on making the space not only beautiful and reflective of them but also simpler and more intuitive to live in.

Q.: How do you balance beauty and function in your designs?

My philosophy is: if it doesn’t function well, it won’t be beautiful to you in a few months. I love and appreciate so many beautiful and fine materials, but if they don’t function well, they become more of a nuisance.

If there’s a fine fabric you love, don’t put it on the sofa—but a darling pillow or window treatment that doesn’t get harsh use is perfect. For hard materials, I love selecting pieces that patina beautifully so they can be lived in and loved over time.

Q.: What role do antiques and vintage pieces play in your interiors?

I love the depth, character, and story older pieces bring into a space. They act as conversation pieces, usually bring warmth, and help create a home that feels collected over time and filled with charm. They’re a must.

Q.: How do you decide when to make a piece the focal point of a room?

Some things just stop you in your tracks—that’s the hero. When a piece is captivating to the eye, it needs to be shared. I recently ordered a stunning Biedermeier round table at Styylish, and it sits at the base of a beautiful staircase, acting as the heart of the home.

Antiques & the Styylish Connection

Q.: What do you look for when choosing antique furniture for a project?

Great lines, well-kept condition (although I believe in refurbishment), great size, and something a bit unique.

Q.: How do antiques bring something different compared to contemporary furniture?

They bring in history and time. Time can’t be created quickly or in a factory, so there’s such strong appreciation for a piece that’s seen more years than we’ve been around. It brings wisdom.

Q.: Do you have a favorite antique era or style you return to often?

I love so many different styles, and if it’s well done, I can be convinced to love it—but I’d say anything from the French Neoclassical Revival is my favorite.

Q.: How do you integrate antiques into modern spaces without making them feel outdated?

They need to be made special and placed in prominent places. If they look purposeful and thought out, they’ll come across that way. I also think the material and lines have to be considered—feminine, masculine, strong, or soft—to ensure they blend harmoniously with contemporary styles.

Trends & Inspiration

Q.: Which design trends excite you right now, and which ones do you think will fade?

I’m loving all the color that’s coming back into design. There will always be a place for monochromatic looks, but color is invigorating and fun—we need it in our lives.

I’m also glad the cool grays and overly farmhouse styles are fading. The best design aesthetics are authentic to the client, not copies of someone else’s style.

Q.: Where do you find inspiration outside of the design world?

Nature. Our Heavenly Father is the best creator, and nature continually blows my mind—color combinations, shapes, intricacies. Go on a hike, a walk, or a drive, and you can’t help but be inspired.

Q.: Do you think sustainability is shaping the way clients and designers view antiques?

Yes, I do. It feels so good to repurpose and rejuvenate a piece that’s been once forgotten. These can be real treasures. I love the idea of finding pieces of great quality and making them last as long as we can.

Personal Favorites & Advice

Q.: What’s one antique piece you dream of owning?

I dream of owning a gorgeous oversized armoire. I’ve always loved them. They’re grandiose and offer more character than built-in cabinets.

Q.: Do you have a favorite design project that really represents your vision?

My vision is always changing and evolving. My favorite projects are the ones where clients trust us to create something beyond what they imagined. We can see the fine details from the beginning—and that’s where the magic lies.

Q.: What advice would you give homeowners who want to start collecting antiques?

Just do it. If you see something stunning that catches your eye, go for it. You can always make the pieces you love work—I always have.

Q.: How can a single antique change the feel of a room?

Immensely. We recently bought a home, and our entry just felt off and quite boring. When I found a piece with beautiful warm wood, great height, and perfect scale, it completely changed the feel of the space. It brought warmth, character, and beauty.

Final Thoughts

Q.: What’s the most surprising thing clients say when you first introduce an antique into their space?

“I had no idea it could make such a remarkable impact and difference!”

Q.: If you could sum up in one sentence why antiques matter in contemporary design, what would you say?

The best-designed spaces carry a design thread throughout, but the real depth comes from bringing in pieces that have stood the test of time.

Brandalyn’s approach to design captures what Styylish Conversations is all about—celebrating the artistry and emotion that antiques bring to contemporary living. Her thoughtful integration of history, function, and authenticity reflects a belief we share deeply at Styylish: that truly beautiful spaces evolve from both time and intention.
