Mid century Armchair- A Pair– Design Kaare Klint (1888-1954)
This mid century armchair by the Danish designer Kaare Klint comes in a pair. The original design for the so called Safari Chairs dates back to 1933.
The exposed teak frame uses the support of doweled rods, slung leather, and brass buckled straps. The backrest swivels for added comfort. The beautiful original black leather is perfectly patinated.
Kaare Klint and the Safari Chair
Kaare Klint was a Danish architect and furniture designer, known as the father of modern Danish furniture design. Clean, pure lines and the use of the best materials of his time and superb craftsmanship are the main characteristics of his furniture.
Kaare Klint designed his chair after chair models being used by Americans or Britons on African safaris. The so called “campaign furniture,” the genre of furniture used by traveling armies since at least Roman times, was the inspiration for this kind of furniture. Campaign furniture needed to be easily broken down, light weight and easy to reassemble.
It was flatpack before Ikea, and the practicality and simplicity of the genre presumably captured Klint’s imagination.
