This impressive pair of antique Baroque columns combines sculptural carving with rich gilt details. Each column features a dramatic twisted or Solomonic shaft decorated with deeply carved acanthus leaves that spiral upward around the column.
Large architectural capitals crown the columns. Bold scrolling volutes, carved floral details and gilt accents create a striking contrast with the warm brown surface of the wood. Additional gilding highlights the carved foliage along the shafts as well as the molded bases.
The vigorous carving and exaggerated architectural proportions reflect the theatrical character of the Baroque tradition. Columns of this type often formed part of elaborate architectural interiors, altarpieces or other ecclesiastical furnishings.
Today, the pair makes a dramatic architectural statement in an interior. Their sculptural form and impressive height make them especially striking flanking a fireplace or mantel.
