Beautiful Pair of Directoire Chairs
This charming pair of French chairs of the Directoire period are dating back to around 1800. The carpenter used cherry wood and embellished the chairs with an exquisitely carved back with a lyre motif. The upholstery of the pair of French chairs is new and they are covered with a green fabric which gives the chairs a fresh and modern touch.
Historical Background
As a matter of fact furniture and ornaments of the French Directoire period used simple shapes with clear lines; the Directoire style’s sparse detail and ornamentation were based mostly on ancient Roman objects recovered from excavations at Pompeii.
Directoire furniture was the last phase of the Louis XVI style and preceded the Empire style. During Napoleon Bonaparte’s reign the French Empire style emerged. Once again the emphasis was lying on the representative function of furniture.
