Six Biedermeier Board Chairs, Cherry Veneer and Mesh, Vienna, circa 1830
A rare set of six Biedermeier board chairs from Vienna/Austria, circa 1830. These chairs feature a wonderful, bright, and friendly cherry veneer on solid wood. They are elaborately hand-polished with shellac (French Polish). There is a lovely book-matched cherry veneer on the shovels. The edge of the shovels have been ebonized and polished. The chairs feature long and elegantly curved, conical legs. As there is no seat cushion, but a board, the legs are higher than with other chairs, making it look very unusual, but still lovely balanced. Use a cushion on top for more comfortable seating. The chairs are in refinished condition, very stabile with old mesh, greatly preserved. This model was typical for the Biedermeier Period in Austria. Back then, Vienna was the capital of neoclassical carpenter workmanship in Europe.
Finding a set of 6 identical and original chairs in such condition is very rare.
