Early 19th-century Empire Biedermeier Armchair, South Germany around 1810-20
This elegant early 19th-century Empire Biedermeier armchair, likely made in South Germany or Austria around 1820, combines a sculptural mahogany frame with refined bronze decoration and generous proportions.
The chair features an upholstered seat, high back, and curved sides framed by beautifully finished mahogany. Most distinctive is the rounded crest rail, which terminates in dramatic carved scrolls with acanthus decoration. Decorative bronze appliqués add elegant Neoclassical accents throughout the frame.
At the front, strong column-form supports rise to spherical mahogany finials and feature ornamental bronze bands. Meanwhile, the sweeping armrests create a graceful transition between the architectural front posts and the high upholstered back.
The design reflects the transition from the formal Empire style to early Biedermeier furniture in Central Europe. Classical symmetry and bronze ornament combine with warm mahogany surfaces and comfortable proportions, creating a sophisticated yet inviting piece.
Currently upholstered in a light striped floral fabric, this antique mahogany armchair works beautifully as an accent chair in a living room, library, bedroom, or entry hall.
A matching Empire Biedermeier sofa is also available, offering the opportunity to create an exceptional early 19th-century salon ensemble.
