Neoclassical Biedermeier Secretary Desk, Cherry Veneer, South Germany circa 1820
An elegant, neoclassical early Biedermeier secretary desk from Southern Germany around 1820. Featuring a beautiful classicist design with gable cornice, restored and of very fine quality.
The secretary desk showcases a bright cherry veneer on hard and softwood (oak, maple, spruce or other softwood). The veneer is almost always book-matched and several parts of the desk, such as the top, are ebonized. The desk is in excellent restored condition with shellac hand polish (French polish).
The Biedermeier desk contains the original brass fittings, one original key, and iron locks.
Inside there are numerous drawers and secret compartments (see images), mostly veneered in cherry wood.
At the bottom, the secretary desk has two doors with an open space behind that contains a shelf-board and a long massive iron lock.
The fold down writing plate is in cherry wood with ebonized decorative trims. A support column under the writing surface was made later and is included with the secretary desk.
